iLASIKILASIK has revolutionized the world of LASIK vision correction. LASIK is the medical acronym for laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis. Custom LASIK is an individualized laser vision correction procedure that is WaveScan driven. It allows measurements to correct imperfections that are unique to each individual's vision. Many of these imperfections could not have been measured before with standard measurements for glasses and contacts. Intralase is the bladeless creation of the LASIK flap that helps reduce complications and offers a biomechaically superior flap creation.

The LASIK procedure treats nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism (football shaped eye). After LASIK, the majority of patients are able to pass their drivers license without glasses or contacts. Many people see better after CustomVue LASIK than prior to the procedure with glasses and contacts. More than six million eyes have been successfully treated with VISX STAR Excimer lasers.

BLADELESS LASIKUntil recently, laser vision correction was "one size fits all". Using measurements developed for glasses and contacts, surgeons could only correct lower order aberrations. Just as no two people are alike, no two people share the same ocular irregularities. The WaveScan technology captures the unique imperfections in your vision that previously could not be measured and corrected. WaveScan technology provides a measurement and a visual representation of your vision based on the behavior of light waves. This allows the iLasik procedure to be truly individualized. WaveScan is digital technology and was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Wavefront technology evolved from research by NASA to correct imperfections of the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA scientists developed a way to measure and correct the aberrations of a telescope to focus on galaxies light years away.


INDIVIDUALIZED

Custom LASIK uses Wavefront technology to measure and treat the imperfections of an individual's vision. The WaveScan is a device developed by Visx that uses wavefront technology to measure imperfections in an individual's vision with the greatest precision possible. WaveScan technology produces a detailed map of your eye and is a visual representation of how one's optical system processes light. Like a fingerprint, the wavefront map is unique to an individual. This new level of measurement provides 25 times more precision than standard measurements used for glasses and contact lenses.


INNOVATIVE

The treatment information from the Wavescan is transferred to the VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser.

The VISX STAR IR Excimer Laser combines Variable Spot Scanning and ActiveTrak 3-D Eye Tracking to achieve the best possible outcome. The tracker monitors your eye alignment during the procedure.

Laser vision correction works by gently reshaping the cornea with a cool beam from the laser to remove microscopic amounts of the cornea. Less than the thickness of a human hair is reshaped to create a new curvature of the cornea.

Creating the corneal flap is the first step in all LASIK surgery. Previously, a microkeratome with oscillating blades was used to create the LASIK flap. IntraLase introduced an ultra-fast laser technology with the use of the femtosecond laser. It generates light pulses as short as one-quadrillionth of a second. This infrared laser creates today's more accurate and precise corneal flaps. The IntraLase laser bean passes through the cornea at 60,000 pulses per second.

After the IntraLase is completed, the eye tracking device is initiated to synchronize the laser with eye movement. The laser reshapes the cornea. The flap is repositioned and an eye shield is placed.
